For a plant the right balance and relations between all the minerals are very important for an optimal growth.

As an example, the base is to have the right amount of N-P-K-Ca-Mg-S-Fe-Mn-Zn-Cu-B-Mo (head- and trace elements) in the right relation, available for the plant.

In case of potting soils based on peat, there are standard base fertilizers and the Calcium is added with the lime (see “Lime”).

Nowadays the mixes are more often peat free and alternatives are used (as compost, coco, bark, woodfibre etc.) and therefore a good research and preparation is necessary to avoid problems in the end product.
